Ayling Property Services Sotogrande, Real Estate Agents in Sotogrande and Gibraltar,established 1977, are now on call seven days a week, for viewing property in Sotogrande, Puerto de la Duquesa, Manilva, Alcaidesa, San Roque, Casares and Gibraltar. Ayling Real Estate Agents was founded in September 1977 by Lieutenant Commander Leslie Edward Ayling, Royal Navy. In those days the border with Gibraltar was closed so Leslie Ayling bought a small speed boat. He would journey by boat from Gibraltar to Estepona. From there he would drive up to Malaga to collect clients and applicants who had flown in from the United Kingdom on inspection visits. He would drive them all the way to Sotogrande using the narrow coastal road, in the days when Sotogrande was only known to a select, few. The car journey from Malaga could take as long as three or four hours when today it only takes just over one hour. Leslie was one of the pioneers who introduced the British Market to an area which was mostly inhabited by Spaniards, Americans and French. The long journey from Malaga airport to Sotogrande on the dangerous winding roads was off putting to the British. It was only when the border with Gibraltar reopened in 1985 that buyers starting gaining confidence in this part of the spanish coast and Gibraltar. Leslie Ayling, as always was ahead of his field and well prepared for the interest in this part of the world. The supreme optimist that he was, he kept waiting patiently until 1985, when the facility to fly to Gibraltar airport was made available to the British Market, then the world was his oyster. To put it in his own words the snowball he started which was so heavy to get to the top of the hill, once there he could not stop it rolling down. His reputation as a man of integrity and forward thinking became known to developers and promoters. These seeked his advice in marketting and promoting their developments. He became the promoter and sole agent of Punta Almina, in the fishing village of Sabinillas, which until then was unknown to the rest of the world. Jeremy Gates and Diana Wildman, Property Editors of the Times and Express Newspapers, visited incognito pretending to be applicants. They were most impressed by the sincerity and forward thinking of Leslie Ayling and published half page editorials in the Property Pages of their Sunday and Daily Newspapers. Leslie also sold and marketted Aldea Beach, Aldea Hills, Manilva Gardens, developments close to the Puerto de la Duquesa Manilva, in fact he named them. Tom Rowland, the Property Editor of the Sunday Telegraph and the Daily Telegraph wrote many articles about him in his property columns. He was most impressed by Leslie’s charm and integrity. They became close friends. Tom Rowland flew out for Leslie’s funeral and gave one of the eulogies at the memorial service after his death on 28th September 2005. In October 1989 a deep recession started but Leslie, who had the full confidence of his clients and applicants, turned his attention to the charming village of Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro, Sotogrande, which in those days only consisted of a few tiny village shops and small village houses. He purchased several building plots of land and built some charming detached villas. They were sold to doctors, accountants, stockbrokers, astute business people from Gibraltar and the United Kingdom. A one thousand square metre plot of land in those days in Pueblo Nuevo village, was only about three thousand pounds, today even in this recession, one is unable to find land in Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro village, for less than one hundred and fifty thousand pounds and that is for a five hundred square metre building plot. The village is unrecognisable with fashion shops, boutiques, supermarkets, English Butcher, hairdressing salons, restaurants, bars, garages, even interflora. Leslie and his wife Margaret, who started out with two offices in Gibraltar in 1977, opened another real estate office in Galerias de Paniagua in the heart of Sotogrande, and then a second one in Sotogrande, in the Puerto de Sotogrande.
